I still can't run test.lua from Scite but I suppose I ought to get over my resistance to reading documentation.

here is a Windows installer for SciTE:

Shortcut on desktop, and puts an 'Open with SciTE'
on the Explorer context menu.

The relevance here is that this includes the scite-debug
extensions, so it can be used to debug Lua.
