I agree. There's no need to assign copyright to a publisher: just give
them a liberal copyright licence. Then you retain the vital ability to
re-licence the work to others.

Academics in my university have been instructed to remove copies of their
own work from their own websites because they assigned copyright to
publishers. I don't expect the Lua Cookbook people to be evil like many
academic publishers; I just mean to illustrate the importance of the
principle.
