That link talks about "versions" of the MIT license, not "variants".

A version is not a variant; a variant may mean "deviating from a
standard", "not agreeing or conforming", "varying usually slightly from
the standard form", etc.

My worry is that the claim "Lua uses a variant of the MIT license",
recorded in the archives, may cause unnecessary noise in the future.
