Game companies can afford to maintain their own version of Lua.
Why can't you? The versions of Lua on my computer have cost me zero in
maintenance over the last few years. If it isn't broke there is nothing
to fix.
The MIT license of Lua offers no assurances those versions will be publically available,

What is to stop you archiving the versions you need? CD Roms are not
expensive.
