So I ended up writing a parser myself in Haskell/Parsec, not wanting
to maintain patched versions of other libraries and so on. Infact I had
bits written already, studying/learning Parsec. (Thus it may not be
completely up to date to 5.1, but seems to work on the source code I
have at hand.) The resulting lua-xgettext is available with
darcs get http://modeemi.fi/~tuomov/repos/lua-xgettext/
