thank you very much for your help. It sounds quite convincing.
Now I'll finally have to wrap my brain around all that metatable
stuff to get this done.

My only concern is that this appears to be relying upon just that
kind of Lua internals that keep changing from version to version.
Having done the transition to "metatables" from 3.2 to 4.0 I'm not
at all confident that I won't have to do a transition from metatables
to whatever even cooler concept the Lua designers dream up next year.
