I think the answer might be a bit of 1 and 3, but I'm not discounting 4.

Based on past history.

More often than not, the real problem is not "X is trolling Y", but
"Y is accepting to be trolled by X". X is not the problem.

Partly but many times people are genuinely trying to help. I forgive naivety over trolling any day (and mea culpa on being naive), and the list would be poorer if we were all cynical over the intent of every post.

My 2 cents' worth: FWIW I don't think Soni is trolling. Perhaps some folks like to throw out ideas for discussion all the time, and discuss them in public. For some of us however, fatigue will quickly set in. Certainly there are many personality types around, and they don't mesh together easily all the time. I just delete more e-mails and tune out of threads.

But having the list engaged in one's discussions all the time isn't good, it's too busy-busy-busy, I think most people will become fatigued eventually. Although stackoverflow would like you to be busy-busy-busy on their site, this kind of behaviour may not translate well to a traditional mailing list.

For some of us, just thank your lucky stars you're not bunking with him on a trip to Mars... :-p
