On further investigation, it looks like the files are doubly gzipped.

$ gunzip lua-5.2.3.tar.gz
$ md5sum lua-5.2.3.tar
dc7f94ec6ff15c985d2d6ad0f1b35654  lua-5.2.3.tar

This matches the md5sum on the download page.
