Yeah, there was a minor flap when they stopped offering downloads.
They still offer downloads for tags, and gh-pages does nicely for
static serving, but what guarantee do we have that these services
remain, apart from basic git protocol?

Distribution is a minor part of the problem; the main thing is
organized repos and good-looking websites ;)
