And this is the rabbit hole that the OP was afraid we'd go down. :-)
Suffice it to say that the intent of the GPL would be to include the
OP's use case. Whether the GPL definition of "derivative work" is
vague or overly broad is best left to lawyers:

Of course "derivative work" is a moot point if you just want to use
code rather than distribute it.
