Yeah, installing from source is easy. But instead of running any 
install scripts, check the script and do a manual minimal install 
-- normally I just copy the executables into /usr/local/bin 
(better than using /usr/bin) and rename them. This is what I do on 
cygwin with multiple Lua versions.
