I like to second that. If however you prefer to do things by hand, I
recommend to have a look at ArchLinux. Not, because it does everything
you want out of the box but because it has a bone simple bash based
build system that allows you to built packages without hassle. This was
you can roll your own and stay within the parameters of the package
manager, which makes maintanance easier. They have a system call aur
(aur.acrhlinux.org) where you will find a lot of ready to roll
buildscript which you can also use as blueprints for your own stuff.
