Apologies. I replied without the proper context.

Steve's reply has a lot of good stuff in it.

Initially I found it odd that require() returns a single object. I think
of class hierarchies more as type information - the real objects would
be created to be of class Derived (the plugin). In this context, though,
the plugin is indeed the object to be created and used.
