Making it open source is crucial.
It's impossible trying to get people to buy into a commercial browser
plug-in (although Flash is the exception that proves the rule).

I'm very surprised that nobody's mentioned the most important bit
yet: It isn't about technical merits or how good the technology
it. The technology doesn't even have to be good.
It's all about marketing and branding.
If you can sell it, and I mean *SELL* it, then by all means, you
have my vote, and please do go for it. :-)
