Lua-GD - Lua bindings for the gd library <http://lua-gd.luaforge.net/>
seems of interest too... (untested)

I agree that Jpeg is bad for everything except photographies...
PDF... Acrobat is too slow and big! I know there is an alternative, but 
still. Why not SVG, then? But initial request was for bitmap.
