Very tough question. 

If you are using zlib1.dll then you must link to msvcrt.dll. Therefore ...

I think what zlib have done is a good compromise. Compile with VC7
and link to msvcrt.dll.

This touches on a religious issue, but, moving from VC6 to VC7 means
that it is worth evaluating the change of compiler. Would one be better off
using gcc or any of the other available compilers. Why use VC7?
