Thank you Thatcher, this is a very helpful bit of real lua code. It may
also save one of my students, who's doing a Lua tutorial for a PL class
project, a lot of trouble.

By the way, it ran very well on my 750MHz w/128MB running Windows
2000. I'm going to put your game on a floppy (it fits!) and try it on some
of the old machines around here. If the results are interesting, I will
post them.
