Dear Lua Mailing List,

Attached is a picture of a warning that pops up quite a lot when building Lua 5.3.5 (downloaded from lua.org) on FreeBSD (with quite a few warning flags). I believe/hope this is the right place to report such things.
Hi Nick,

The makefile for Lua 5.3 was updated for better support in FreeBSD and I failed to report the warnings in time for the final release. Build configuration for all BSDs is much better in the new 5.4 that is coming out.

The port/pkg for Lua53 is up to date and without those jarring warnings. It also provides build options for readline.

A warning to build LuaRocks from source: The FreeBSD default version of Lua is 5.2 so the "ports tree LuaRocks" can't be used against 53. Andrew Gierth is working on better support through FreeBSD FLAVORS that will make it's way into the "ports tree LuaRocks" soon.

The ports tree should be updated for Lua 5.4 shortly after it drops. I'll note that Andrew has also been cleaning up the Lua modules and ports tree packages that have a dependency on Lua, though I'm not sure if the work has been committed.

In case you are interested, the maintainer for xmake (Lua based build system) will start working on FreeBSD support for xmake 2.x soon.

Yay FreeBSD!
Russ

Regards,
Nick.
