Well, all the cool _javascript_ kids are doing functional programming these days. I don't think it's a big stretch :)

Lua is used often for scripting and modding games. I doubt most mod creators have a background in mathematics, especially considering I started when I was ~13 years old.

  That's surprising to me.  At work, I've had to explain closures and
functional programming.  I haven't even mentioned currying yet.

  And I work with programmers who have 30+ years of experience.
