The wiki might also stand some combining of pages on sorting tables by
someone who understands tables better than I do. The last time I
checked (a year ago or so), we had the following pages that read on
that topic:

lua-users wiki: Ordered Associative Table
http://lua-users.org/wiki/OrderedAssociativeTable

lua-users wiki: Ordered Table
http://lua-users.org/wiki/OrderedTable

lua-users wiki: Ordered Table Simple
http://lua-users.org/wiki/OrderedTableSimple

lua-users wiki: Sorted Iteration
http://lua-users.org/wiki/SortedIteration

lua-users wiki: Sorted Iterations Simple
http://lua-users.org/wiki/SortedIterationSimple

lua-users wiki: Table Library Tutorial
http://lua-users.org/wiki/TableLibraryTutorial

lua-users wiki: Lua Sorting
http://lua-users.org/wiki/LuaSorting

lua-users wiki: Functions Tutorial > Using functions as parameters and returns
http://lua-users.org/wiki/FunctionsTutorial

lua-users wiki: Scite Sort Selection
http://lua-users.org/wiki/SciteSortSelection

BTW, this email thread can be linked to
<http://lua.2524044.n2.nabble.com/Question-on-table-sorting-td7666458.html>.
(Nabble seems to update more quickly than the list archives.)

Best regards,
