I don't see how it really changes anything at all, except that it provides that the path, like the environment variable, will look for the version specific path first and the general path second.

The main reason I threw it out there is that every time I've tried to maintain seperate trees, I've given up. Sounds like this is not wanted, so I'll drop it. :)
