Tim, Tim,

You just don't get it--Thomas is trying to turn Lua into Smalltalk, I've tried to turn Lua into Ruby (mostly off list, missed so many opportunities to pester the list!), other individuals have tried to turn Lua into Python, Lisp, Haskell, etc. I may have overlooked some examples.
Maybe we should let Lua be Lua for a little while? Nah, where's the fun in that?!

By the way, in case my sarcasm is unclear, I agree totally with Tim's point.

You forgot COBOL .. i think Lua needs PIC statements.

You are so right, but PIC? I learned COBOL back in the day when programs were input on punched cards. The school I went to had an IBM 360 mainframe with an enormous amount of RAM: 32K.  Real Men (i. e. real COBOL programmers) had to write out PICTURE the way the Computer Gods intended. :) On the other hand, REAL MEN (all caps intentional) programmed in assembly. Nobody had heard of C in the parts of 1975 I lived in.
