Hello, Tom.

I am not sure I understand. I have the official luasocket package installed on my system and I have the latest Xubuntu (13.10). Do you mean that this is newer package that is compatible with Lua 5.2?

The latest lua-socket[1] package work in both 5.1 and 5.2. The dependencies
are light so you should be able to backport the packages without having to
rebuild anything. Just download the DEBs and install them manually.
