I notice there is an option, when you create a repo on github (in the web UI), to have an initial commit created with a README, and also a license (choosable from a list of alternatives). That's fairly handy (if you remember to use it).

I do wish github would bully me about this kind of thing, because I
forget those little biting insects and get patient emails all the time
about the licensing of my projects.
