The Erlang community has mini conferences (called Erlang Factories) all over the world as well as the main yearly Sweden hosted User Conference. I see no split issues there at all. It's a really nice way to diversify communication.

Last year we got continental Europe. This year will be US.
Honestly I don't see such a big deal.

It is not a very good thing to split the community this badly though, I think.
