Relying on a Google search for API calls is too fragile, IMHO.

Probably newbies will just have to learn by using their grey cells. Back in
the old days, self reliance and systematic problem solving are valuable
skills. I'm sorry if I don't sound too enthused about hand-holding... :-)

Back in the old days there were a lot less newbies. Now more and many
from the... casual layers of society are interested in Lua
programming (which is a good thing, actually). We have to cope with that :-)

Well, I think Roberto & co have not actively pushed Lua to newbies (a term which I would prefer to avoid using too much). I would prefer to see a Lua intro book or a Lua intro website. Putting effort into Google search for API calls doesn't seem to be that useful to me. Are there any Lua intro sites around BTW?

Besides, if they are using C API calls, they can probably code a fair bit of C and I'm sure they can fend for themselves just fine :-)
