luasched comes with a similar shell (probably more telnet-friendly, no syntax highlight) under MIT license. The catch is that it's integrated with our scheduler: this can be an issue for some use cases, and although it could be adapted to stock monotask Lua, we don't plan to do that ourselves.

I tend to agree that the GPL is incompatible with the way most of Lua community works.

Puttin this under the GPL license makes it almost unusable.  Can't you
license it under same license as Lua itself or a BSD license?
