Eh! That's pretty much how I feel :P

Unfortunately that tactic doesn't quite work for a mailing list, as it assumes two crucial elements: identification and one canonical version of the truth.

Neither is possible with a mailing list as no one is authenticated per se, and one can have multiple, different views of the mailing list (e.g. gmane vs. marc), making the disappearance of one own messages quite obvious.
