Alternatively, at least please make a highly visible red warning note
on each page of PiL 1 web version.

That being said, maybe it is possible to just open current PiL edition
for everyone?

Since it is self-published, I guess, the only stopping point is money.

What about a donation run with a threshold a-la Humble Indie Bundle?
If community donates enough money through regular Lua donation system,
the book PDF will be published?

This is merely a humble suggestion. The Lua team, of course, have full
rights to do whatever it wants with PiL.
