I think that, at least in part, this is because guys at Ansca Mobile
are actively advertising their product, Corona SDK, which allows users
to code cross-platform mobile apps in Lua. Products, developed with
it, did score a few AppStore hits. If you look at new
StackOverflow Lua-related questions, quite a lot of them are about
Corona SDK.

No numbers to prove or disprove anything though.
