Sorry, my fault.
Our limited platform means we can't use setjmp/longjmp and the
LUAI_TRY(L,c,a) macro wasn't ported correctly (a wasn't being called).
This caused all sorts of problems.
Anyway, it's working now.
Thanks for the quick turnaround of ideas.

I can't see anything wrong...
But try changing it to
{"_G", luaopen_base},
though the problem is probably somewhere else...
Also, don't stop the GC before calling luaL_openlibs.
