Not really, they also claim that the GPL extends to the source code (or,
more precisely, that the source code must be distributed along with
bytecode, and distributed under GPL-compatible terms).

The argument is that Emacs Lisp programs won't work without Emacs, and
are designed to intermingle with Emacs, so they are a derivative work of
Emacs.
