"Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs" is the one book
to rule them all. You can even read it all online, although I wouldn't
recommend it:

The book uses Scheme, but all of the concepts apply perfectly to Lua.
Another superb book (in a very different way) is "The Little Schemer":
