I'm planning to make the VM plugable in the lua4j implementation, so it should be possible to execute 'C' based byte code too using your VM code.

I'm currently developing an implementation of the lua programming language in Java. It's 100% pure java, with no JNI requirements.
I've got a complete lexer and the parser is about 70% done, will be looking to get a pre beta out in the next couple of months.
So, yes there is interest but not anything you can really use right now.
