Why would you not call close?  One universe can be finished while others are not.  The problem is not the close itself, but the fact that it is sharing a locking mechanism with other threads.  If it locks that mechanism and then shuts down (because we are done with that universe) but never unlocks then that's unfriendly to the other universes that are still running.
