Try it:

$ make install
cc   src/lua.c   -o src/lua
/tmp/ccbkZmVc.o: In function `lstop':
lua.c:(.text+0x25): undefined reference to `lua_sethook'
[... dozens of errors omitted ...]

This means make ignores src/Makefile and resorts to default
rules (which are not sufficient).
