Now the infamous gsub() function looks something like this:

                if ( ( aCode ~= nil ) and ( aCode < 256 ) ) then
                        return string.char( aCode )

                if ( aValue ~= nil ) then
                        return aValue
                end
        end

        return string.format( "&%s%s;", aSymbol, anEntity )
end
