lua -w?

Hello,

I would love to use "lua -w", but... require() doesn't seem to like it 
much:

lua: attempt to access undefined variable `LUA_PATH'
stack traceback:
        [C]: ?
        [C]: in function `require'
        Example.lua:6: in main chunk
        [C]: ?

Is that on purpose? Is LUA_PATH mandatory?
