I played with the free version - impressive for its size and elegance,
rather like Lua. So the question is: why can't Lua be ported
to Inferno?

Inferno is a Limbo-centric environment, if you want to port Lua you has
to recode it in Limbo (all or part at least).
It not seems to be a trivial job.
