Yes, that is a solution. :-)

If really one want to keep a monolithic file of the archives, he just 
have to choose an e-mail client storing folders in Mime format (like 
Mozilla) or able to export them to this format.

Of course, this suppose he doesn't delete any message, at least until 
they are archived...
