Override (in C) table set/get. Where?

Where should I be looking to put a hook (c function pointer) inside LUA 5.0 
in order to be called when a table get/set occurs? I'm thinking 
luaV_settable() and luaV_gettable() perhaps?

I really need a way to transparently share tables between multiple LUA 
clients, and this would allow me to propagate the change across the client 
network without it changing the LUA language itself.
