Thank you all for the amazing response to my enquiry.

The replies were all informative and well directed to my question. I
think I will proceed with the idea of set line and call "hooking" in
order to implement a "Time-out" feature.

I am glad that I chose LUA for my project, the LUA programming manual
is most elegant and this level of community support is very reassuring.
