So add a bunch of complicated machinery to make Lua easier to build on the one platform that it
already includes a makefile for?

I've always appreciated the fact that, like Lua itself, the distro is clean and simple. The make
files are tiny and easy to read. There are no superfluous files.  Polluting the distro with
autoconf would be tragic.
