Hygenic macros?

Every so often, this list mentions the possibility of adding something
like Scheme's hygenic macros to Lua.  What was the latest state of that
suggestion? 

I'll just throw in my vote by saying that if Lua had hygenic macros, it
would open up a lot of pretty amazing possibilities.  If it could be added
without ruining Lua's simplicity, it would give Lua every feature I would
hope for in a macro language.
