Same for me, except for me it was a Tandy PC-4 pocket computer with BASIC and the accompanying guidebook with code for a bunch of games. I played the games for a while, and eventually that led to hacking on the code and then writing my own programs at 8 years old. It took me 12 years after high school to decide what I wanted to do with my life, but I'm now getting ready to start my senior year of university next week, majoring in computer science.
That's awesome! That's also how I started on my Commodore 128 with a Type-In game books written in basic.
Some of you may know that Roblox is a massive online gaming system that allows users to create their own games. The games are scripted in Lua (5.1). My seven year old son has started making Roblox games, which mostly consists of WYSIWYGs and editors. He is now at the point where he wants to start understanding the scripts that he gets from the Youtube tutorials. The link below is a picture of my seven year old son reading Programming in Lua:
Brings a tear to an old lua hacks' eye.
