About the link to the lua home page: where do you think should it be? if you want to "hide" it on the main page - fine with me, but let's put a link to www.lua.org that can be easily found somewhere (do you agree that reference (numbered) links can be easily missed if you are scanning a site for a link?) - i'd be happy to put it on the links page again - i was only removing it from there because you were objecting ;-)

P.S. what do you think about swapping "Featured Pages" and "Starting Points" on the HomePage ? i think it would make more sense to start with the starting points.

P.P.S. i got an idea which would require change of the wiki code (an easy change, i hope, i am not that familiar with perl...): What about adding a link "comments" link to the footer of each page? This link would lead to an extra page that seperates the meta-discussion about the pages from the content itself. The Comments page could also be shown on the edit page, so that anyone who is editing a page can't miss the comments on it. The wiki name of the comments page would just be the same as for the page with an added word "Comments" at the end. (so this discussion about the HomePage could be done on the HomePageComments? page)

OK, I saved the best argument for last :-). There is already a clear link to the Lua site on the lua-users.org homepage [1]. I don't think it's necessary to pay such homage to the Lua site on every component of lua-users.org (yes, there are more components coming).

hmm, that would be a good argument if there would be a link to that page from anywhere within the wiki ;-) (of course your link above IS a link to that page in the wiki, but i mean a link that is easy to find) i don't want to pay homage, i just want that it is easy to navigate to the official lua home from the wiki.

Regarding discussion pages, there is already a wiki idiom that works reasonably well and doesn't require adding more markup or special cases, which I happen to be firmly against. The idiom is to simply make a page XxxYyyDiscussion? and link to it from XxxYyy? (witness LuaScoping and LuaScopingDiscussion). However, it's not a good idea to make discussion pages too often. Ideally discussions about a page's content should be short-lived. The approach I like is to first make a NOTES section at the bottom of a page and, should that turn into a big debate, then make a dedicated discussion page. --John

Hmm, i am always reluctant to clutter a page with some comments on how to improve it - because that means i will make it more ugly (even if only temporary) while i was perhaps just pondering some minor improvement (like the swapping of the sections on the homepage - you didnt answer on this yet btw. ;-)

Also, old notices about agreements on pages (what should be on a page and what not) are useful for everyone who joins in the future to change that page.

I think it would be a very good idea to seperate content from discussion about what that content should be. LuaLinks is a good example of a page that has both mixed: the foreword is lengthy (and mostly only of interest to editors of that page) and additionally a NOTES section at the end exists. i'd really like to have a clean and lean links page, and all the comments on a seperate page, which only those people view that are interested in editing the page.

Why don't you like the idea? because the number of files of the wiki grows? Another idea would be a comment tag for the wiki source, that you will of course see when you edit it, but that is not displayed on the final page.

Seems like we should be exchanging email at this point :-). I wasn't confident that "featured pages" was a good idea, I like the home page uncluttered. However I wanted to feature LuaAddons when it was handed to us. Featured status is maybe not permanent, pages may come and go. In any case to feature something is to make it prominent, which is why it's on top. * * * Maybe when there are more components in the future we'll have a logo displayed site-wide that will link back to the lua-users.org homepage. * * * Wiki is an inexact thing, and I fear a plan to systematically separate content and discussion will lead to trouble. Pages like LuaLinks are a special case because they are meant to be edited frequently by everyone, even casual users. Therefore it's essential to spell out the policy of the page, and do it in the most obvious place so that no one will miss it. * * * Feel free to restore the Lua site link on LuaLinks. --John
