While both may be valid in US and UK English, that is not true in
computer science technical English, which is the language of the
reference manual. In computer science, "brackets" is understood to
mean [ and ], while "braces" is understood to mean { and }. In a
technical document such as this, that is an important distinction,
since rarely are both valid syntax for the same purpose, and using the
appropriate technical term is necessary to precisely specify which
needs to be used.
