There's a bunch of threads started this month about the JIT. I suggest you check the archives and read through them. As of right now, there is Ravi, a 5.3 runtime, and Opeth, a 5.3 bytecode optimizer: https://github.com/Nymphium/opeth.

Will Lua 5.3 ever get a JIT compiler? It's been about 2 years since it's release yet nothing.
