Since this thread is still going, I'll add my $0.02... even though I'm a lurker on this particular list typically.
The key difference between a list and a bulletin board is push vs pull.
There are lots of bulletin boards I have contributed to over the years, but my contributions to bulletin boards pale in comparison to my contributions to email lists.
With a bulletin board I have to actively go and look if there is something I want to contribute to. Unless I am in some way motivated to visit the bulletin board, I never see the messages, and there is no chance of me making a contribution to the community.
With a list the messages all show up in my one mailbox I dedicate to lists. I can manage and skim dozens of lists at the same time. Because the incremental work of skimming the traffic a typical additional list generates is pretty low I'm likely to add more lists. This ease enriches the community because each person who joins the list is another potential voice.
As I said, just my $0.02
Hi
Sorry to complain folks, but one of the things I dislike about the Lua community is the reliance on this out dated mailing list format for discussing Lua.
I was reminded about it again today with 2 msgs I received, one was discussing how Yahoo users are now getting flagged as spam, and also a weird msg I got from
lua-l-bounces+
670184d2a3b7b4bda5cd0ccbf10e30 , telling me I had lost messages due to several mail bounces (I am not a Yahoo user).a75d072006@lists.lua.org Why I am losing messages I have no idea.
In my opinion it would be so much better to move to a message board format. Here are a couple of Python examples
http://www.python-forum.org/,
I would cite the following arguments for it.http://python-forum.io/.
1) I dont want to have to filter out Lua messages from my personal Emails, so I had to create a new mail account solely for this Lua List. Why should I need to do this ?
2) The message board format, is more aesthetic and pleasing on the eye to browse through.
3) Searching old messages is easier with a proper message board
4) Reading code snippets in this mailing list is hard due to the screwed up html formatting. Custom code paste options in message boards solve this problem and make reading code so much better.
5) A minor point granted, but I would much prefer instantly clicking on a html link to read messages than the current irritation of having to log out of my personal email account and log in to my Lua mail account.
I cant think of any arguments against a message board format, apart from it would take some time and effort to set this up. I would be interested to hear other peoples opinions about this and why it hasnt already happened ? Am I in the minority with this point of view ?
Regards Geoff
