If your shell is Zsh you can try RockZ, which is shell-only:

  https://github.com/aperezdc/rockz

It is like virtualenv, but for Lua: it uses the Lua versions installed
system-wide, making self-contained directories where LuaRocks puts
installed modules. It supports LuaJIT, too :-)
